What is Acupuncture?

The function of acupuncture is to improve the overall health of your body without the use of unnecessary drugs or medications. Acupuncture stimulates the body's energy, called Qi ("chee"), to flow freely in the body and help it heal from physical and emotional conditions.

If this energy or Qi circulation is disrupted, optimum health is affected and this results in pain or illness. Qi circulates throughout the body in specific channels called meridians. Each meridian consists of acupuncture points along the skin and these points are stimulated with fine needles.

The Science of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Science has determined that human beings are complex bioelectric systems. With acupuncture, the needles activate the meridians which are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures and systems. The use of acupuncture sends subtle biochemical messages throughout the body to improve energy flow which encourages healing.

The most critical step in receiving an acupuncture treatment is to first get a complete diagnosis. This usually includes a series of in depth questions by your Acupuncturist, inspection of the tongue and taking the pulse. From these observations, the Acupuncturist can piece together the most beneficial treatment for each individual, improving energy flow and promoting good health.

The Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture promotes the body's natural healing ability. It is a safe and effective treatment option that can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies for a wide range of conditions.

Are you feeling skeptical about acupuncture and it's healing powers? The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) cites numerous conditions that have been shown to respond to acupuncture.

Are you afraid of needles? Are the Acupuncture needles making you think twice? Do the acupuncture needles hurt? These are fine questions! Many people are not comfortable with needles and as such they have an almost irrational fear of Acupuncture as a result. You really should consider Acupressure as fears are overstated. Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick strand of hair. Acupuncture needles are solid and nothing is injected through them. The Acupuncturist quickly taps the needle into the skin and often is said to feel like a little mosquito bite. Which as many Canadians know, mosquito bites are more annoying than painful.

Acupressure uses the same meridians and the practitioner holds the point with a light finger touch, not a needle. It can be used when treating young children or sensitive adults and is equally as effective.

If you have a fear of needles but you would like to try the healing benefitys of Acupuncture, then please discuss it with your acupuncturist.
